(My latest post for Manchester Fashion Week! I really enjoyed delving into a bit of Mulberry history to write it, so hope you enjoy reading it just as much! Shame now all I can think about is getting my hands on an Alexa! )
Luxury British brand Mulberry is due to round off the
Thursday fashion shows this coming Manchester Fashion Week. First launched in
1971 the brand has bags of heritage, (literally), with Mulberry becoming
Britain’s first lifestyle brand featuring jackets, bags, belts and chokers that
were quintessentially British! Since then, the brand has become well known for its
enviable handbags such as the iconic Bayswater and more recently the Alexa,
inspired by celebrity and style icon Alexa Chung. Gathering quite a fan base of
admirers including the likes of Kate Middleton and Kate Moss who are often
spotted clasping the latest pieces, the brand celebrated its 40th
birthday last year.
The luxury leather
brand has always seeked to “represent a unique juxtaposition between global
fashion influence and a heart routed in the English countryside”(Godfery Davis,
CEO), and with this is mind it is one of the few existing brands which products’
remain to be designed and manufactured in the UK. Current creative director
Emma Hill who joined the brand in 2008, has continued on the creative and
heritage initiatives, taking ‘timeless styles and giving them a contemporary
twist.’
Lana and the 'Del Rey' |
With that in mind, the A/W 12/13 collection is due to show a
new bag, the ‘Del Rey’, which has been inspired by songstress of the moment
Lana Del Rey to be modern yet classic with a touch of Lana’s ‘signature glamour
and mystique.’ The brand’s endearing current collection for the spring summer
season has been inspired by seventies summer fun, with the quirky campaign
photos shot on Brighton Pier surrounded by melting pastille fruit lollies and
ice cream. The pastel power of the campaign had me daydreaming of candy rock
and English seaside holidays which will no doubt be bought to the city for Manchester
Fashion Week!
